I left my straightener turned on %26amp; on the carpet and went out {forgetting about the straightener}fortunately my Mom came and turned it off.

But I turned it on again today and it smells like smoke.

I always straighten my hair on the carpet my friend suggested that I straighten it in the bathroom that way if I leave it on but on the countertop nothing would happen,I'm not sure though.

Ya something could happen and you could start a fire. I like to sit on my carpeted floor in front of my mirrored closet doors, and what I do is I use an old textbook to sit my straightener on. This way I'm preventing burning the carpet.

yes and yes... I left mine like you did and when I came home almost 2 hrs latter it had melted the carpet and it was smoking REALLY bad and need less to say both the straightener and the carpet were ruined

Yes, that could do it, as heat (iron) plus flamable material (carpet) can result in flames and smoke. I would do it in the bathroom, or at least place the iron on a table or something instead of the bare carpet!

I've done that, leaving the straightener on the carpet, it did burn the carpet, now it looks like we have poo streaks on our carpet. No joke, I've been asked if it's poo multiple times.

I agree with your friend, you should straighten your hair in the bathroom, on the counter. There's less risk of fire there.

you may have shorted it. how about a new one? and by the way, there are straighteners that are sold with a 'heat shield', a little cover for the straightener that you can use to stop it from burning stuff when you put it down. mine is by revlon
